Does expensive insurance stop you from getting your pieces of technlogy insured?

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Having the best clothes, technology and gadgets is always something that crops up especially at school and in the office. However what happens when in face you cannot be bothered to insure them on purchase simply because you just want to get home and use it or even because of the fact that major companies charge ridiculous amounts just too simply take out insurance with them.

This is where gadget insurance comes into play covering you from everything from mobile phones, sat nav’s, cameras and even hand held games consoles. Of course the last thing you need at the moment when times are a bit harder than they were a couple of years ago is to have to pay out to get your favourite gadget repaired or even replaced which is what many companies love.A way round this comes from something at a cost of potentially under £3.From as little as under £3 a month it is hard not to see why getting out gadget insurance could benefit you.

What’s worse is that many of the insurance policies you can take out with the company that you purchased the specific gadget with do not actually replace or refund your money if you have the product stolen from you which means that not only have you had to suffer a traumatic experience of someone either coming into your house and stealing or being mugged in the street but your insurance is not going to cover it at all!

Gadget insurance will take care of anything from theft to accidental damage to the product and can really put a mind at ease when walking around with a high tech gadget in hand.
If gadget insurance is not needed at all then don’t risk the home either and take out home insurance!

What Students Want from University

What Students Want from University

The Daily Telegraph has published the results of a student poll, conducted by Olympus, that showed that students priorities are not getting a good degree but going on fancy dress pub crawls and falling asleep in lectures.

The list entitled ‘Things to do before leaving University’ includes many archetypical student experiences like arguing with housemates over who should buy the toilet roll; ringing your parents only when you need money; collecting 500 friends on Facebook and spending no more than £10 on a night out.

I could have added a whole list of additional experiences based on my own days as a student. These would include contracting a venereal disease from drunken sex with various strangers; falling asleep on the roof of a parked car; racing across a golf course on mountain bikes and breaking into a zoo to try and steal a penguin.

These are all typical student experiences. But student life can be fraught with risk. There are many students who actually have vey unhappy or unpleasant times at college or University. Often they are in unfamiliar towns and cities, away from home for the first time where they might find themselves prey to unscrupulous landlords only too happy to take their limited cash.

Students in many of Britains cities and town are prime targets for muggings and theft. Its well known that students all have mobile phones, laptops and mp3 players and these are very attractive to local criminal gangs who prey on these unsuspecting young students. Student life can be a lot of fun, but these days it can also be fraught with danger. Todays students would do well to take classes in self-defence and avoiding confrontation.

Having fun, making friends and enjoying the freedom of being away from mum and dad are all part of what it is to be a student. But the important thing is to stay safe.

Why Blackberry Insurance Necessary?

Blackberry Insurance – Why?

Be certain as to why you want a blackberry insurance. There are 2 main reasons why it is necessary for you to insure your Blackberry…

1. High cost of replacing your phone can be covered
2. To have your phone replaced quickly and easily

1. Another reason is to cover the high cost of replacing your Blackberry.

Your Blackberry most probably actually cost far more than you paid for it. As they want you to use their phone network and pay them for your calls both pay as you go and contract mobile phones get largely subsidised and discounted by the network. The full amount usually hundreds of pounds has to be paid by you when you come to replace your Blackberry as the phone networks will usually not subsidise the handset.

To find the replacement price of your Blackberry mobile phone, the easiest way to do this is to buy the new phone as a pay as you go (which is discounted slightly by the networks) rather than as a contract phone. You will be required to simply search www.google.co.uk for “pay as you go Blackberry” to know more information about the price.

It is not economically viable to insure your phone as some insurance policies charge so much each month and it would be better to buy a new one. If you are a contract customer rather than a pay as you go Blackberry mobile phone customer, you need to run a simple calculation which will be different. The reason behind this is that contract customers can usually upgrade their phone to a new phone after the 12 month contract is ended – which means contract customers can get then get a highly subsidised new Blackberry.

Contract Blackberry customer will be able to first simply find the replacement Blackberry mobile phone cost (as a Pay As You Go as described above). Divide the given number by 12 months. It is an indication that the insurance is worth while if the number is larger than the monthly insurance premium.

Take for example at the moment the Blackberry Curve 8900 on pay as you go is £399. £399 if divided by 12 months = £33.25 for one month. As this is likely to be more expensive than the insurance per month, the insurance may be a good option.

In this example, Blackberry insurance would cover this phone under the Standard Policy cover at £5.88 a month (plus they do discounts)

Make a payment for 12 months at £5.88 = £70.56. A probable good option for this Blackberry Curve 8900 is insuring it as it is a lot less than the £399 replacement cost.

You will only get the usual pay as you go price if you are already a pay as you go user, and no further discount from the network will be provided (contract customers get much more discount). So the cost for your replacement ,no matter when you replace your Blackberry mobile phone, or how long you wait, would be only as low as the pay as you go cost.

Because you have to decide how likely it is that your Blackberry mobile phone might be damaged, stolen or lost etc, it is more about how you decide to insure your Blackberry phone. It is upto you to decide if 18 months or 24 months would be safe for you.

For even a period of 24 months, 24 x £5.88 (insurance premium) = £141.12 is still considerably less than the replacement cost, so it is worth considering this insurance again.

2. So as to get your phone replaced quickly and easily

Consider yourself without your Blackberry for days- is this acceptable to you?

If you feel this is ok, then great. With any Blackberry company you need to carefully check what the turn around time on a claim if your phone is vital to your business or your personal life. Unless they promise a rapid turn around time of 24 to 48 hours, then don’t assume they will be fast – some have waited weeks!
Some Blackberry insurance companies do promise a rapid replacement time.

If you manage and stay on top of the process by calling the insurance company daily and asking for an update they will know how important your Blackberry is to you this plays a key part of a rapid replacement. There are some customers who are not worried about when they get it, so not all are worried about replacement time. For a quick replacement you just need to let the insurer know about it. In order to telephone them daily after making a claim you simply have to make sure that you have their Claims telephone number. You need to make sure your claim could be accepted online or by email, or by fax, so that they get it immediately before choosing your Blackberry mobile phone insurance company. The process of your insurance claim can be made faster using these facilities. You will likely need to send it to them if your phone is damaged send it yourself using a courier because this is the fastest way to reliably get it to them.

So these are the main things to consider for your Blackberry Insurance

Stolen Camera?

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Well if something does happen to your camera when you are away there isn’t too much you can do about it unless you have camera insurance and even so there proposes a problem, you are not likely to be able to actually get a replacement whilst you are on holiday.

As this doesnt help you whilst you are in holiday it is best to go out and just get a cheap camera until you can get home and have it replaced as then at least you have something to take pictures with when you are away. This will not actually allow you to get the money back from the camera you purchased out there but it will allow you to get back that expensive camera of yours totally free of charge.

There are many places out there that will simply not cover you if you are on vacation so perhaps it could be a very wise decision to dive into that insurance policy to have a little look.

Now is really the time to take out some insurance on the camera as it has recently been announced that 41% of people carry on with them wherever they go.

If you a fan of using the Sat Nav when you are away then you actually get world wide cover sat-nav insurance that will cover you if the device breaks when you are driving down the unknown streets of a foreign country.

Although once again this will not help you if you are in the middle of nowhere on holiday, it will help as when you get home you do not have to buy a new one.

Gadget insurance is a general term for both of these and others and can actually be purchased to cover up to five different items. If something does happen then you are certainly going to save money by getting out insurance.

The Pain of Losing My Mobile Phone

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

None of us expect it to happen to us, but then it inevitably does. In my case, two times. I’m refering to losing my mobile phone.

The first time I lost my mobile was clearly due to too many drinks on a boys night out. Thinking back I was using my mobile phone on my way home and must have left it on the back seat of the taxi. The following morning, when I realized what had happened, I called the cab firm only to hear that my phone had not been found. I suddenly became aware of how much of my life was stored on that little device.

I vowed that I would be far more careful in future and get myself some mobile phone insurance to cover the cost of replacement. But the expense was the last of my concerns as I’d lost a whole load of telephone numbers and contact details that were only stored on my phone and nowhere else.

We all do it. We’ve all gotten into the habit of simply entering someones contact details into our telephones and rarely do we back these up to our computers or even to an old fashioned address book.

The second time I lost my mobile phone was on another night out but this time I wasn’t the worse for drink. I am convinced that a pickpocket was operating in the club and they had expertly removed the phone from my pocket. It’smore likely that I dropped it on the floor when getting some cash from my pocket at the bar. I was in a nightclub so I told the bar staff and security guys but, unfortunately, my phone didn’t turn up.

Unfortunately I had not followed my own advice and hadn’t taken out a mobile phone insurance policy. But, subsequent to my previous experience I had kept a record of all the new phone numbers and contact details that were on the device so the loss wasn’t quite as disastrous as it had been the previous time.

You may be wondering if there is a moral to this tale? Not really. But I strongly recommend that you regularly backup all of your contact details from your mobile phone and consider getting some insurance to cover the cost of replacement.

Essential Student Insurance Policies

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

When we are students we could all use a bit more spending money and when we begin to earn enough to spend we couyld all do with a bit more time in which to spend it.

Being a poor student often leads to avoidance of what are seen to be unnecessary expenses like insurance. The can be a false economy. For example, travelling without adequate travel insurance is simply foolish. If the worst should happen and you need to be repatriated due to illness or an accident then the expense, without insurance, can be crippling. Yet many students still choose to head off for their gap year on the road with inadequate insurance cover.

All travelling students need to be sure that they have the travel insurance that they need. And its worth ensuring that your travel insurance policy covers all of the activities that you are planning to carry out while on the road.

Although it might be argued that a life insurance policy should be low on a student’s list of priorities this is not the case for personal possessions. Students these days have a whole load of expensive electronic gadgets including costly laptops, ipods and mobile phones. And these expensive devices can often be lost, stolen or damaged. At the very least every student should consider getting some mobile phone insurance and maybe look at other low cost, specific insurance policies for other valued possessions.

At the very least I would suggest that all students should insure their mobile phones and their laptops against loss, theft and damage. Gadget insurance will mean that if he worst should happen and your laptop of mobile gets lost or damaged at least you will be able to afford a replacement. Insurance will buy you a new laptop or mobile phone but can't replace all that valuable lost data?

PC Laptop Insurance Coverage

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

When you travel, business doesn’t stop and laptops have become an essential tool in business. The speed, convenience and communication that laptops provide to you and your business are simply indispensable. The increase number of laptop users and the increasingly important role laptops play has been noticed.

Insurers have noticed. They have taken steps to create policies that will protect you from loss of productivity due to the loss of use of your laptop. Many of these targeted policies will cover other electronics also and insurance can save you time and money helping you get done what you need done more quickly and easily just like your laptop.

Each company offers different policy and each policy’s coverage is different. Many will cover your laptop and other electronics internationally which makes it practical for any business trip regardless of the destination. You can find some that will provide complete replacement if the laptop is stolen, lost or damage. Others may only provide for repair.

Out of steeling they have also thought of the ordinary accidents which can cause a laptop to stop functioning within a second. These accidents are usually caused by liquids, such as water. These can happen even more often than any other threat regarding a Laptop. The other key of their service lies in speed.

As we’ve stated one of the major benefits of computers is the speed that it allows you and your business to operate at. Many of the insurance policies available to cover laptops keep that in mind. Check out the policy you are considering and verify the time it takes to get a replacement; some are as quick as twenty-for hours.

If you are interested in learning more about the various laptop insurance policies that are offered you can look on-line. A number of the offers that you find will actually offer you immediate coverage once you supply the necessary information. Verifying that it is a reputable company is important though so do some research.

Laptop cover is a form of computer insurance. With laptop computer insurance your laptop is replaced should it get damaged. This allows for a swift replacement and therefore less expense. Look online and you will quickly find cheap laptop insurance policies.

Golf Insurance – Why You Need To Be Covered

Friday, August 7th, 2009

When the subject of insurance comes to mind, it is often associated with cars, home or life cover. But what about cover for other property or activities, for instance playing golf?

In this case we’re not just talking about being a professional like Tiger Woods but those who play casually, right up to those who play regularly and enter tournaments. There are a number of reasons why being covered while you are playing golf is important and here are just a few:

Theft, Loss or Damaged Equipment

Ask any golfer how much they spent on their clubs or golf bags and trolleys and you’ll understand why it’s reassuring to know that your equipment is protected. Imagine being on your way to play golf with your clubs in the boot and your car were to be stolen; your clubs and other golf equipment would be covered as part for your golf insurance policy.

Personal Liability Cover

Let’s face it even the pros have an off day, a wild shot fired off the tee, caught by the wind and straight through a nearby greenhouse, or worse: someone’s windscreen!  Personal Liability would cover you for any damage or harm caused by an errant shot, even if you were to yell “fore!” at the top of your lungs if the ball were to strike a fellow golfer out on the course then you are still liable for any medical costs in the eyes of the law so being covered for this eventuality is a great money saver, especially as you’re learning the game!

Hole in One Cover

This one is a bit bizarre but apparently it is a real concern in the golfing world.  The holy grail of getting a hole in one is meant to be the pinnacle of a golfer’s skill and good fortune, the trouble is that it is usually the tradition that the drinks are on you when you return to the clubhouse.  This could be a very costly affair, taking the shine off your crowning moment, so hole in one insurance is vital for skilled or simply optimistic players.

Dental Insurance Cover

On the opposite side of the luck coin is getting hit by a golf ball yourself. Just thinking of catching a 300yds+ drive square in the jaw will make anyone wince.  At best it is just very painful, but at worst you could need medical or dental assistance.  Some golf insurance policies offer coverage for dental work you may require from playing golf, just hope you never have to claim for this occurrence.

These are just a few examples of where golf insurance can be a really good idea. With quite a few situations where you could be left significantly out of pocket if you were not to be insured then it’s worth looking into immediate golf insurance to give you peace of mind while out playing the game you love.

Mobile Phone Insurance – Is it worth it?

Phone Insurance – Why Bother?

When you first buy your mobile phone (cell phone) you probably got pushed to buy the add-on insurance – or maybe you got given a few months free insurance together with the phone.

This free add-on is a clever and very profitable technique which phone dealers use to get you inadvertently into subscribing to the (cell phone) mobile phone insurance iteself. When you get the phone and the free phone insurance you are automatically set up to pay by Direct Debit for the insurance at the end of the free period.

But the question is this:

Is phone insurance really needed?

To answer that you need to answer 2 specific questions – the answer to which varies from person to person.

  1. Do you want to cover the cost of replacing your phone?
  2. Are you worried about being without your phone for an extended period of time?

If your phone is Pay As You Go then you will be acutely aware of how much a decent phone costs because that is what you paid when you bought it.

In fact, pay as you go phones are not actually the real cost of the phones because mobile phone operators slightly subsidise the cost of the handset. This is because these phones are usually locked to only work on their network, so they make up for the loss on the cost of the phone calls.

But they are not discounted by much (relative to the discount given to Pay Monthly contract customers) because they can be unlocked to use on other networks. However, most people do not do this – so the network knows they will get that customer’s calling minutes and business.

If you are a Pay Monthly contract customer, chances are that you did not pay anywhere near the real cost of the phone – they get heavily discounted. Networks know they’ll get your money – so they can discount your handset.

Yes it was free on a new contract – but it wont be to replace.

You can go down to your local phone shop and buy a pay as you go phone as a way to get a replacement phone. So that is your replacement cost.

As a contract customer this wil be considerably more than you thought it would be. For example the Apple iPhone is around £300 or US$400 to replace. That will hurt your wallet if you have lost it, or damaged it or some idiot has stolen it – for that you wowuld most likely want specialist iPhone insurance.

So how are you going to pay for it?

That is what mobile phone insurance is for. But is it worth it?

Unfortunately there have been many insurance operators who have fleeced the customer and charged high prices for an insurance policy that just did not make economic sense. EG – you are likely to pay £7 or probably more after the free period.

Now if your phone is top of the range and expensive to replace, this might make sense, but not if you have a basic ‘I just want to make and receive calls’ type mobile phone.

So the insurance needs to be tailored to what phone handset you have.

If you have a cheaper phone, then it will be cheaper to replace, therefore the phone insurance should be cheaper. A more expensive phone should have a more expensive mobile phone insurance policy.

So that is a key decider in who you choose to insure your phone; can they tailor or offer a policy for your specific phone handset?

While you are looking at the financial side of covering the cost of replacement, you also want to consider whether the phone insurance company insist on a long term contract; many do, some do not.

If you must sign a 12 month contract (standard with many) then the cost of the insurance is a straight forward calculation of 12 months multiplied by the monthly cost. If this amount is bigger than the cost of replacing the phone yourself (by purchasing a Pay As You Go handset) then the insurance is not worth buying.

If there is not a 12 month contract then you are free to do as you choose.

If you are a Pay Monthly contract customer then there is another consideration. Once you are not tied to the contract you can either upgrade to a new (replacement) handset or go to a new network.

So towards the end of your phone contract the mobile phone insurance has less and less value and worth to you as a customer because you are at less risk of having to pay out a big bill to replace the phone.

IMPORTANT – Once you have a new phone again, you will have to pay the full replacement cost. You would have to pay the full price to replace your mobile phone if it was lost, stolen or damaged, so you are more likely to want to have mobile phone insurance.

Often, people say they can get their phone insurance via their home and contents insurance – but if you make a claim for a (relatively small) phone cost, what is going to happen to your no-claims bonus and your home insurance premium cost next year?

So getting mobile phone insurance is about sensibly minimising the risk of having a big replacement bill, without spending hugely on the monthly insurance policy.

The best way to achieve this is to use an insurance provider who does not have a 12 month contract and who has the right price insurance policy for your phone (not a ‘one price fits all’ policy)
